Lemura Sand Company Pty Ltd was established by owner Adam’s grandfather Sam Lemura as a sand extraction operation in the late 1970’s. In 1997 Adam’s parents Paul and Cathy Bugeja chose a new direction for the company by expanding it to include a licensed (ERA 60) landfill operation for the purpose of rehabilitating the extraction voids on the site. In the year 2000 the sand extraction rights were sold to PNQ allowing LSC to focus solely on the operation of the land rehabilitation of its sites. In 2019 LSC entered the resource recovery industry via waste materials processing and recycling while also maintaining focus on the rehabilitation of the extraction voids.
LSC Recycling & Rehab processes, shreds and screens waste materials, converting them into products that can be reused in new ways. One example of this is construction and demolition waste that contains a lot of concrete. This is crushed down so it can be used in new applications such as a road base product and fill material.
LSCRR has a unique model where clients are charged a fee to drop off material for processing; they are then able to take any of the processed material away with them free-of-charge. It's this distinctive 'drop and take' model combined with a passion for working towards a circular economy that has LSCRR known as Far North Queensland's premium material recovery specialist.
The entire operation is very professional, tidy and well organised, with large highly specialised processing equipment and a dedicated crew of experienced operators.
Adam and the LSCRR team are continually looking at ways to extend on the circular economy idea by exploring new opportunities in waste processing while keeping up-to-date with the latest processing technology and machinery.
A key company value is to give back to the community via support for charities: by running awareness raising campaigns and by providing on-going monthly cash donations to various chosen causes. These include the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation which supports nine hospitals, two multi-purpose health services and fifty-three primary health centres in the region, plus a range of other charities that provide support and research for breast cancer, men's health, Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
The causes are very close to the hearts of the LSCRR team, with a number of family members being affected by the conditions and diseases. Because of this LSCRR is openly passionate about raising funds and raising awareness. Anyone who visits the recycling hub will notice that many of the large machines are brightly wrapped in pink, blue and purple—all of which representing the various charities that are being supported, while also acting as a conversation starter to further raise awareness.
